A veteran of the United States Navy, Alvarado wrote her winning essay about the PTSD she suffered from an assault and its subsequent effects on her ability to pursue her career goals.<\/p>\n<p>Raised in a long-time Navy family, Alvarado always wanted to join the military. \u201cI joined the U.S. Navy in 2011. I knew that I would enlist from an early age because I wanted to follow in my father\u2019s footsteps just as he had followed his father\u2019s footsteps,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<h2>Alvarado\u2019s Accolades<\/h2>\n<p>Initially, her time in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/\">U.S. Navy<\/a> was remarkable. Alvarado was a top recruit, becoming a Corpsman, ranking first in her class for Advanced X-Ray Tech C School, and earning two associate\u2019s degrees. She was also named Sailor of the Month, Bluejacket of the Quarter, and Bluejacket of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in 2015, the trajectory of her life came to an abrupt stop. \u201cI was assaulted, and my life was forever changed,\u201d wrote Alvarado. Once a straight-A student, she began to be overcome by stress and anxiety in classrooms, which led to her failing all her college courses as she pursued a bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n<h2>The Effect of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder<\/h2>\n<p>After dropping out of college in the wake of her PTSD, Alvarado decided to make a career change and try beauty school. \u201cI was able to go to the classes for about a week,\u201d she wrote, \u201cbut anxiety and fear once again got the best of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PTSD from her assault forced Alvarado into giving up her one-time dream of becoming a doctor, but she has found tremendous courage to pursue a new career. Taking inspiration from her husband\u2019s live-in caregiver business, she has decided to complete her bachelor\u2019s degree in Business Administration.<\/p>\n<p>But her ambition does not end there. Alvarado plans to use her experience and knowledge in the business world to eventually become a business law attorney. Thanks to the online program at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgu.edu\/\">Western Governors University<\/a>, she is able to mitigate the effects of her PTSD and continue pursuing an education.<\/p>\n<h2>About the Veterans and Military Families Scholarship<\/h2>\n<p>Alexis Alvarado is a perfect example of the type of person we wish to elevate at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sinklaw.com\/\">George Sink Injury Lawyers<\/a>.
