A chemical in everything from child sippy cups to canned food is being banned across the nation.<\/p>\n

While the federal government has yet to pass a bill banning BPA, or bisphenol A, state governments are taking a stand against the chemical that has been likened to heart disease, brain development and other diseases.<\/p>\n

California and Delaware are proceeding in efforts to ban BPA in food containers for children. The bill was passed unanimously in both of Delaware’s houses, and will now proceed to the governor. In California, the bill did not pass without difficulty through the Senate Health Committee; however it finally passed with a 5-2 vote. The Assembly passed the bill last month, and now must be heard in the Senate Environmental Quality Committee before it can advance to the Senate. The bill bans BPA in food containers and sippy cups as well.<\/p>\n

Currently, nine states have bans on BPA already in place: Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin. According to news reports<\/a> , legislation was introduced by 26 states to ban BPA. <\/p>\n
