This is because there are limits to how much you can collect from the two systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, the total amount of benefits cannot be more than 80% of your average earnings. If benefits exceed this level, the SSA may adjust the amount based on how much you receive from workers\u2019 compensation. If your workers\u2019 compensation benefits run out, your benefits will increase back to the normal payment amount.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this rule applies to workers\u2019 compensation programs, there are other benefits you may receive that will not affect your disability benefits. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Privately funded pension and insurance benefits\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VA benefits<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to Get Benefits<\/h2>\n<h3>Social Security Benefits<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two different benefits programs available through the SSA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/benefits\/disability\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is insurance that you pay into. This is a medical guide that lists conditions and medical criteria to determine if you qualify for disability benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/benefits\/ssi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplemental Security Income (SSI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides benefits to aged, blind, or disabled people with low income and few assets. In addition to establishing that you are aged, blind, or disabled, you must prove that you meet the income and assets threshold.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Workers\u2019 Compensation<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are injured on the job, there are certain procedures you must follow to collect workers\u2019 compensation. The first thing you must do is report what happened to your employer or supervisor. Then there will be claims forms you must fill out and documentation you must provide that are based on your company\u2019s policy and the laws in your individual state.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Differences Between Workers\u2019 Compensation and Disability<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While both workers\u2019 compensation and disability are insurance programs that provide compensation if workers become disabled and are unable to work, there are major differences.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Workers&#8217; Compensation<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workers\u2019 compensation programs are run by each state, not the federal government. Employers pay premiums to their insurance providers and are not allowed to charge employees for benefits. Code Ann. \u00a7 42-1-150<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, businesses with four full or part-time employees or more must carry workers<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compensation insurance.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, workers&#8217; compensation is designed to be temporary. Receiving workers\u2019 compensation allows employees who have been hurt on the job to have income while they heal from their injuries or wait for acceptance for SSDI or SSI benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the circumstances, once they start receiving SSDI, injured workers may still continue to collect workers\u2019 compensation, although benefits may be reduced.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Social Security Disability<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSDI and SSI are federal programs run by the SSA. There are qualifications you must meet in order to receive benefits. The qualifications differ between SSDI and SSI.
