Media sources reported that the US government’s recall of over two million cribs from a variety of manufacturers in June of this year has parents asking themselves: Just how safe is our child’s crib?<\/p>\n

Michelle Freedburg, the owner of Bellini Baby & Teen Furniture, offered her advice to parents that are shopping for a crib for their child. “Safety, safety, safety is the most important thing. Don’t skimp when it comes to your baby,” Freedburg said. The recalls did not affect Freedburg’s stores because Bellini doesn’t produce drop-sided cribs, which were the type recalled. After receiving multiple complaints, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that cribs with moveable side rails might potentially malfunction and leave a gap that can entrap a child’s head and result in strangulation or suffocation.<\/p>\n

Freedburg says that, as a mother of two, she can appreciate the difficulty of investing in a new crib and understands the appeal of hand-me-down cribs from friends. But she says that when cribs are passed along, they can lose essential parts and bolts. Her advice to new parents is to “buy a new crib that is safe.”<\/p>\n
