The city of Myrtle Beach is known for fun and sun, but it has a different reputation for locals: it can be a very dangerous place to drive .\u00a0 The influx of tourists unfamiliar with the road, irresponsible drinking and driving, as well as difficult intersections have made a few places dangerous or and even deadly.\u00a0 The South Carolina Department of Transportation has taken numerous measures to improve the safety conditions in these areas, but many of South Carolina’s most dangerous intersections continue to cause problems in Myrtle Beach. Please drive carefully when approaching the following intersections:<\/p>\n

  1. Seaboard & Highway 501
    \n<\/b>Many tourists come through Myrtle Beach through this intersection. This has been the scene of many rear-end and chain-reaction car accidents over the years as drivers become distracted by the many signs and shops near the beach.<\/li>\n
  2. Carolina Forest Boulevard & Highway 501
    \n<\/b>Local drivers avoid this intersection whenever they can. While it is outside Myrtle Beach city limits, it is still a common place for auto collisions. There are many aggressive drivers who dart in and out of traffic on Carolina Forest Boulevard, with no regard for the other vehicles around them.<\/li>\n
  3. Seaboard & Oak Forest Lane
    \n<\/b>This intersection near the Home Depot and Wal-Mart can be difficult to navigate as it is hard to determine who has right-of-way and where to stop.<\/li>\n
  4. Oak Forest Lane & Pine Island Road
    \n<\/b>Just down the road from the last intersection, crossing Pine Island Road can be near impossible as you try to enter the Coastal Grand Mall from Oak Forest Lane. This intersection held the record for the highest number of crashes in the city, with 70 crashes in three years, according to City of Myrtle Beach police records.<\/li>\n
  5. Highway 501 & Highway 17 Bypass
    \n<\/b>Any place where two highways meet is guaranteed to have a number of auto accidents occur over the years. Heavy traffic flow from 501 and the bypass make for difficult travel in this area.<\/li>\n
  6. Highway 17 Bypass & Farrow Parkway
    \n<\/b>Known as “The Back Gate,” this spot has been the site of many serious accidents, including several fatal car wrecks outside Market Commons. Some drivers have been known to run the red light at night.<\/li>\n
  7. Highway 501 & Four Mile Road
    \n<\/b>This Conway intersection recently made the SCDOT’s list for the Highway Improvement Safety program and was ranked as the highest priority. According to data collected by the SCDOT, there have been 42 car accidents here since 2008, including 2 fatal crashes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
