President Obama is likely to sign the food safety modernization act into law when he returns from his Hawaiian vacation on Tuesday, according to news reports<\/a> .<\/p>\n

The long-awaited food safety bill will place stricter standards on imported foods, give the government broad new powers to increase inspections of food processing facilities and force companies to recall tainted food.<\/p>\n

“Under the measure, the secretary of Health and Human Services would be required to create a food tracing system that would quickly focus on the source of contamination should an outbreak occur. It also requires food importers to verify the safety of all imported foods to make sure they are in accordance with U.S. food safety guidelines,” according to news reports.<\/p>\n

The bi-partisan bill was passed late last month by Congress during the last days of its lame duck session, right before the end of the session. The modernization act is the most-sweeping overhaul of the U.S. food safety system since 1938, according to news reports.<\/p>\n
