William Kyle Carpenter will soon become the first South Carolinian  to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War. The Medal of Honor  is the nation&#8217;s highest military honor awarded to service members  who demonstrate acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty. Carpenter  \u2013 a 24-year-old Marine Corps veteran from Gilbert \u2013 was seriously  wounded in 2010 while serving in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Carpenter&#8217;s story is a tremendously powerful display of courage and  selflessness. While in Afghanistan, Carpenter was wounded after throwing  himself onto a grenade in an effort to save a friend and fellow Marine&#8217;s  life. As a result, he lost his right eye and most of his teeth. His right  arm and jaw were also shattered, and he has since undergone dozens of  surgeries.
