A Columbia woman is taking matters into her own hands to promote seat belt use.\u00a0 Just one month-ago, the woman received a horrifying phone call that her 22 year-old son had been killed in a car accident<\/a> .\u00a0 Her son had been a passenger in a 1995 Ford Econoline van that was traveling eastbound on Route 25 in Massachusetts where he was working for the summer.\u00a0 When the van crashed, he was thrown from the vehicle.\u00a0 The two other passengers survived, but sustained serious injuries.<\/p>\n

Though the accident reconstruction reports are not yet finalized, the woman believes her son was not wearing a seat belt at the time.\u00a0 In this article she said, “My son just didn’t think it was cool to wear a seat belt, he never wore one.”\u00a0 In an attempt to make sure the same tragedy didn’t happen to other families, she started an outreach effort that she calls, “Buckle Up For Bryen.”\u00a0 She uses shock value to try and get the message across to people who aren’t using their seat belt.\u00a0 At his funeral, she even handed out keychains to those who don’t wear seat belts.\u00a0 On the keychain was a picture of either the accident scene or Bryen’s dead body at the hospital.<\/p>\n

Now, she acts as a crusader for her cause by waiting at intersections.\u00a0 When people stop at a red-light, she will hand them one of her keychains if she notices that they’re not buckled up.
