South Carolina has seen an increase in seat belt use so far this year, in addition to experiencing fewer car accident<\/a> fatalities\u00a0 than in previous years.\u00a0 Regardless, cracking down on drunk driving is still a main focus for the South Carolina Department of Public Safety which has teamed up with local law enforcement agencies to implement their new program, “Sober or Slammer!”\u00a0 According to SCDPS Director Mark Keel in this news article, “DUI is an epidemic,” which still remains the leading cause of death on our highways.\u00a0 The crackdown will focus on the weeks leading up to the Labor Day holiday which is traditionally one of the most deadly traffic weekends of the year.<\/p>\n

We are now three quarters of the way through the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” which began on Memorial Day weekend.\u00a0 Since then, we’ve seen 136 fatalities, which is a 39% decrease from last year’s 223 traffic fatalities.\u00a0 Keel delivered a special message to South Carolina citizens today when he stated, “DUI is a careless disregard for human life.\u00a0 DUI is a crime.\u00a0 And we can all be crime fighters; not just men and women in uniform.\u00a0 Concerned citizens who call *HP to report a drunk driver are fighting crime just as a sober person who says to an intoxicated friend, ‘I’ll take the keys tonight.”<\/p>\n
