Rear ending a semi-truck in a car can be extremely deadly, and the safety barriers preventing cars from sliding underneath are failing, according to a new study.<\/p>\n

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the size difference of trucks versus cars are extremely dangerous in the event of a rear-end car accident.  More than 350 people are killed each year when their car strikes the back of a tractor-trailer. The collisions are especially deadly because cars can slide underneath trucks, crushing vehicles and the passengers inside.<\/p>\n

Safety guards on the back of semi-trucks are put in place to prevent these fatal accidents, but many are failing, according to news tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.<\/p>\n

“Our tests show how easily some of these guards are failing at relatively moderate speeds,” said a representative with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said to news reports.<\/p>\n

The institute said it wants the government to require tougher standards on the safety guards and is calling on the government and the trucking industry to beef up the barriers.<\/p>\n
